We should be playing a significant role in this coming election, and by that I mean all of us. There is nothing like an election for extracting assurances from politicians - a cynic might say that a democracy is an autocracy inconvenienced by occasional elections. Put yourself in the candidates' shoes, especially in a precarious seat, of which there are now more than ever. MPs and their challengers can no longer take votes for granted, even from their traditional supporters, and they certainly cannot afford to be dismissive of constructive ideas that come from one of their constituency's voters in the heat of an election. It is funny how they suddenly see the light!
