The recent bad weather, which came earlier than expected in December, once again caught the railway unawares and once again, the 'modern' railway was simply unable to cope. The oft-bleated mantra that 'don't travel unless your journey was absolutely necessary' is trotted out at every news bulletin and once again we were made to feel foolish or naive if we did try to travel. And that shouldn't be the case. We live in a developed country, with plenty of infrastructure, so why should a bit of snow stop us?
