'Safety First!'

"Safety First!" That's a slogan with a long history in the railroad industry. And it's one that's just as important now, at the end of the 20th. Century, as it was in the early years when it first became popular. And it will be equally important as the 21st Century moves from silly debates about what year it really starts into an accustomed reality. My mentors at the former Chicago and North Western taught me that the slogan originated in a steel mill, where it was seen by a C&NW officer, who promptly adopted it for his railroad. It was in the railroad industry that it developed its tremendous popularity.
