Network Rail reports that the national average PPM score for Period 6 to September 17 was 87·4%, down by 1·4 percentage points from 88·8% in P5 2016-17 (RBI518 p6). The national aver-age MAA PPM was also down, at 88·0% from 88·3%. In P6 the national average right-time score was down at 62·3%from 64·2% in P5, and the MAA also down at 62·9% from 63·3%. RBI notes that both the PPM and right-time MAA scores have been in a steady decline since the end of 2014-15. Operator of the second-oldest fleets in the UK, Merseyrail returned to the top of the PPM table for the fifth time in the last seven periods with a P6 score of 95·6%. 'This figure would have been even higher had it not been for poor performance on the last day of the period, where we suffered badly from track circuit and axle-counter failures at Hamil-ton Square', Managing Director Jan Chaudhry-van der Velde told RBI. Having risen to top spot in P5, TfL Rail fell to fourth place in P6. The TOC noted that despite many days when it had achieved a PPM score above 96%, it had been affected by four poor days when performance was hit by a rolling stock fault, a suicide and track circuit failures.
