The better we get, the more we expect

Any athlete can tell you that the better their performance gets, the more that is expected of them from teammates, coaches and fans. Take the San Francisco 49ers football team, for instance. After winning four or five Super Bowls, the team's supporters have come to expect that same level of achievement, and feel let down with anything less than being number one. Cries of disappointment ring out when superstars Steve Young and Jerry Rice can't pull off one more touchdown while the fourth quarter clock winds down. This attitude reflects "the better we get, the more we expect" syndrome.
