Saturday 19 September is the day when New Zealand elects a new government. In the lead-up to that day there will be a lot of politicking and promises that may or may not be kept. Transport issues, and rail in particular, appear to be prominent in the political arena. KiwiRail, a State Owned Enterprise, is caught up in these events. KiwiRail began running the TranzAlpine on 4 July on weekends and during the school holidays in July and August, and will then reassess the operation. It is understood that because a large number of overseas tourists travelled on the iconic train KiwiRail was not keen to restart the train until the borders reopened. Political pressure forced an early resumption of the service, even on a limited basis.
