At the beginning of December last year Dunedin Railways, without consultation, announced that as from January the railway would no longer operate the stretch of track between Pukerangi and Middlemarch 'for the foreseeable future'. This decision took the 70% shareholder of Dunedin Railways - Dunedin City Council, the community of Middlemarch and railway enthusiasts, by surprise and has caused much discontent in the communities that are served by the railway.
