China milk scare reaches Europe

Four infants have died and tens of thousands of young children in China are seriously ill after drinking milk contaminated with melamine. More than 80% of the sick are under two years old. As the crisis came to light, more than a dozen countries including Australia, New Zealand, India, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore have all either pulled products off shelves, banned China dairy imports, or stepped up their tests. In the UK, Tesco took precautionary measures by removing milk sweets from its shelves. The European Commission responded by asking the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to provide urgent scientific advice on health risks for European consumers of composite foods containing milk or milk products originating from China.
