Trivalent chromium deposits have been in use for more than 30 years. The corrosion protection provided by trivalent chromium is better than that which is provided by standard hexavalent chromium deposits, and it is equal to hexavalent microporous chromium deposits in real-time corrosion studies as well as in actual use. Electroplaters have used the process for its operating advantages in the past. However, employee safety and environmental regulations are forcing remaining hexavalent chromium electroplaters to switch to trivalent chromium processes.
