BCCE construction begins and 60 years remembered

After months of utility works along the route of Midland Metro's Birmingham City Centre Extension project, construction of the new line began in earnest during August. The UK project involves creating a 1.4km (0.9-mile) link between Birmingham's Snow Hill station and the new entrance to New Street. Balfour Beatty is responsible for designing, constructing, testing and commissioning the new GBP18.6m (EUR21.6m) tramway. In addition to the new infrastructure, the project involves substantial improvements to the public realm including natural stone paving, street furniture, lighting and landscaping. Operational service is to be introduced in 2015.
