Designing Modern Childhoods is an edited collection of fifteen illustrated essays plus an introductory essay by the editors Marta Gutman and Ning de Coninck-Smith, an epilogue by John Gillis and a foreword by Paula Fass. Marta Gutman is an associate professor of Architecture, Urban Design and Landscape Architecture at the City College of New York and Ning de Conink-Smith is an associate professor of Educational Sociology at the School of Education, Arhus University, Denmark. Together they have collaborated on many projects in the history of childhood over the past decade and have contributed substantially to the developing discipline of Childhood Studies and in particular to the significance of materialities and design in modern childhoods. In 2002, they organized a successful multidisciplinary conference at the University of Berkeley, California, bringing together an international group of scholars from the fields of architecture, history and childhood to focus on the theme of 'Designing Modern Childhoods'. This book is one of the products of that particular collaboration.
