This fascinating study arrives at a critical moment in the debates over European integration and adds much of interest to those who examine the nuances of policy change in Brussels, and complain of the growing lack of democratic legitimacy, economic crisis and incompetence. The book's specific enquiry concerns the effect on European communist parties of the relentless push towards integration of EU member states. It comes just a decade after the seminal account by Richard Dunphy (2004) of the effect of 'ever-closer union' on the radical left in Europe, which included a detailed historical review of Communist party divisions in response.
