What does architecture want? That is the question posed by this deceptively compact, intellectually ambitious, intricately structured, and deliberately provocative book. But the book also pursues other, more resolute, desires. It is a tenacious assertion of the current potential of critical theory-its admirable, and perhaps incredible, ambitions to think totality-and of the viability of a bracketed set of concepts-those of Jacques Lacan, but also Fredric Jameson, Slavoj Zizek, Louis Althusser, and Theodor Adorno-as valid, even necessary, tools for historical understanding.
