Every Tuesday Morning, Paul Lemerise leaves his wife and his house overlooking the Bob Hope Desert Classic golf course in Indian Wells, Calif., hops on a 7 a.m. plane, and moves into his second home―a hotel room in South San Francisco. There, he spends the week fulfilling his contract as a temporary CIO for Columbus Sal-ame Co., a food distributor. "My wife would prefer I have a normal job where I work 15 minutes away and she sees me every night and our life would be 10 times better," Lemerise says. "But with this economy and the average life cycle of a CIO, this is the direction of the industry."
