Indian remote sensing satellite IRS-1D launched on September 29, 1996 provides LISS III imageries of 23.5 m spatial resolution. For mapping forest cover change near mining area of Makum coal field, Assam over the period from 1988 to 2002, combining of IRS-1D LISS III and Landsat TM data has been found very effective. Satellite images of Landsat TM of year 1988 and IRS-1D LISS III image of year 2002 are used in the study. To perform the change analysis images were calibrated to correct the radiometric and geometric discrepancies and resembled to bring all images to the same resolution. Maximum-Likelihood Supervised classification technique was used to classify the NDVI transformed images and post classification change detection was applied to study the extent of changes over the specific time period. Degree of deforestation due to open cast mining in Tirap colliery and subsequent changes in this area including plantation by the mining company to regenerate the greenery of the area are quantitatively established.
