Lest we forget to remember

The world of magazine publishing is such that although this is the December issue, it hits the streets in the UK in November. Since 1918, that month has been a special time of remembrance, and as our News pages in this issue carry several items on memorials this is a good moment to reflect on the nature of commemoration. Be they bolted to a wall in the form of a plaque, set on or in substantial local stone, or planted in the ground, memorials are intended to last a very, very long time.
