Average UK business profitability outside the financial sector rose slightly from a recessionary trough of 11.3% in 2009 to 11.7% in 2010. This was still well below the average of the past decade, as economic and financial weakness has been followed by fiscal austerity and sluggish economic growth. Profitability is perhaps the most vital element of healthy business because it sustains commercial momentum and generates funds for investment. Investment, whether in extra staff, product design, basic research or new marketing, in turn provides the foundations for future business growth.
