I have claimed that Rawls was a "grounded liberal" in Strike's characterization of the term: Rawls clearly did develop and draw from principles and procedures that tied him closely to Kant. For Rawls, principles are procedural rather than metaphysical; nevertheless, they are Kantian. Rawls's few statements on education also suggest a strong Kantian influence, because they emphasize his view that schools are places where children learn the ethico-political values and procedures of democratic society. Here we see that Rawls's (admittedly sketchy) educational theory is far from derivative or tangential — it is in fact the key to recognizing how deeply Kantian his attitude remained to the very end.
