Minimizing Energy Consumption in Cloud Datacenters using Task Consolidation

Cloud service providers are experiencing the huge demand for the computational power asmost of the companies are outsourcing their IT services to the cloud. This increased popularity of cloudcomputing has resulted in the establishment of large-scale datacenters with the huge number ofcomputational intensive servers. These datacenters are very much expensive to maintain as they consumeenormous amount of electrical energy, which results in the emission of green house gases like carbondioxide. One of the main reasons for the huge power consumption is the inefficiency of the existingresource scheduling algorithm, which utilizes the existing resources in the non-power aware manner. Thispaper is based on the idea that the power consumption is directly proportional to the CPU utilization ofthe server, and hence proposes the task consolidation technique which maps the users requests i.e. task tothe virtual machine in such a way that it maximizes the CPU utilization and minimizes the energyconsumption at the same time. CloudSim is used as the simulation tool kit to show how the proposed taskscheduling technique is more power efficient compared to the existing task scheduling technique.
