JAPANESE PRODUCTION AND IMPORT-EXPORT TRADE OF CANNED FOODS IN 2011

Japanese annual production of canned and bottled foods continued to decline and amounted to 3,314,000 metric tons in 2011, which was 97.9% of the last year production. Among these products, canned provisions have decreased by 7.0% from 250,261 tons in 2010 to 232,790 tons in 2011. All the canned commodities, such as fisheries, fruits, and vegetables, decreased from the previous year. The aftermath of Great East Japan Earthquake aggravated the decrease of canned production.The import of canned foods increased by 6.5% from 667,555 tons in 2010 to 714,866 tons in 2011, reflecting an appreciation of the yen. Yen appreciation against the US dollar in 2011 turned out to be from ￥82.63 on January to ￥77.85 on December, during which the difference expanded to ￥4.78. Consequently apparent consumption of canned and bottled foods in 2011 increased to 1.05 million tons, comparing to 1.01 million tons in 2010.
