FROM IDEALISM TO DISREPAIR... AND BACK AGAIN

Zonnestraal was designed as a rehabilitation centre for TB patients in Hilversum, near Amsterdam. It was designed for the General Union of Dutch Diamond Workers by architects Jan Duiker (1890-1935) and Bernard Bijvoet (1889-1979) with structural engineer Jan Gerko Wiebenga (1886-1974) on a woodland estate, and was organised around the central Hoofdgebouw administration and communal facilities block (1928).
