Maurice Strong - patron of Biodiversity

In November 2000, the first year of publication of Biodiversity, Maurice Strong agreed to serve as our Honorary Editor. He then became a Patron in 2006, and held this position until his death on November 27, 2015, just before the start of the Paris Climate Conference. Born in Oak Lake, Manitoba in 1929, Maurice grew up in poverty during the great depression. His long and varied career spanned the worlds of business and public service. After working in Canada's energy and mining sectors he joined the government of Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson as Deputy Minister in charge of external aid, and led the establishment of what was to become the Canadian International Development Agency.
