Before I ever thought of coming to Australia, but long after seeing Mad Max and Crocodile Dundee, I learned about the culture of the place from Kath and Kim. My first viewings were painful; I couldn't believe it was based on fact, until I came here six months ago. The opening sequence of the show is an aerial pan-shot of the sprawling new suburbs. The only way I was able to grasp the monumental scale of it was to spend three hours lost somewhere in the fray in search of a Bunnings home warehouse. But the majority of my experience so far has been the area around our home in South Yarra, and my office downtown; I have yet to visit Fountain Gate.
