High-quality fibres from wheat proteins

Researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the USA have developed a method for making fibres from wheat proteins. Led by Professor Yiqi Yang, the team dissolves one or more wheat proteins in at least one of an alkali, acid, alcohol, reducing agent, amino acid, chemical additive or salt, in rations of about 0.5-50% by weight. To create the spinning solution, they then age the dissolved proteins at temperatures from -30℃ to +150℃, processing them for 1 -80 h.
