传教士译者的佛教印象——理雅各英译《佛国记》研究

摘要

《佛国记》是东晋沙门法显西行寻求佛教典籍归来所撰写的一部纪实性游记。作为研究佛教史、中南亚史、中外关系史以及历史地理学的必不可少的著作，其影响已超出了中国，成为世界文化遗产中的一块瑰宝。19世纪以来，《佛国记》受到各国学者的关注，被译为多种语言出版。英译本中，理雅各1886年的译本注释甚多，最为佳译。 本文依据阐释学、功能翻译理论以及异化翻译理论剖析和研究了理氏《佛国记》，主要从语言与文化两个方面探求译文特色及得失。翻译的阐释学派认为，译者自身知识的局限会导致翻译的失误。虽然理雅各以严谨的学术态度研究了《佛国记》中晦涩难懂的佛教术语，难以查核的人名、地名，但其对中国语言文化了解有限，译文仍不免出现理解上的偏差。功能翻译理论认为，译者的翻译策略往往会受其翻译目的及其社会经历所影响。在19世纪后半叶汉学蓬勃发展的大环境下，理雅各选择了翻译《佛国记》，在充分尊重中国佛教文化的前提下，采取异化策略，运用直译，忠实再现了原文的形式和内容，并通过考究的译文辞措和脚注积极探索了佛耶对话的可能性。
