THE NATURE OF OGLE TRANSITING PLANET CANDIDATES

Transit observations of extrasolar planets, combined with measurements of their radial velocity variations, allow us to determine the most important parameters of the planets, such as their orbital periods, their masses, radii, and densities. Recently, the Optical Gravitational Lens-ing Experiment - OGLE - has announced a number of planetary transit candidates, which would be the first extrasolar planets discovered with this technique. We have observed a number of these candidates with UVES at the VLT, and report on their true nature. Also, we report on lessons learned from the two OGLE campaigns for transiting extrasolar-planets in 2001 and 2002 for the Eddington space mission.
