Retail customers provide a number of significant challengesrnto the efficiency and effectiveness of distributionrnsystems. These challengers include shorter delivery windows,rnfluctuating volumes and a wider product mix. Thisrnpaper demonstrates the use of discrete-event simulation torninvestigate policy issues regarding the incorporation ofrnretail customers in a road delivery network from the spokernterminal of a hub and spoke distribution system. In particularrna comparison of a mixed (retail and non-retail)rndelivery policy with a dedicated retail delivery run isrnmade.
