Abstract: The quantitative whole field flow visualizationtechnique of PIV has over the last three years beensuccessfully demonstrated for transonic flowapplications. A series of such measurements has beenmade at DRA Pyestock. Several of the development stagescritical to a full engine application of the work havenow been achieved at DRA Pyestock using the IsentropicLight Piston Cascade test facility operating with highinlet turbulence levels: (1) A method of seeding theflow with 0.5 micron diameter styrene particles hasprovided an even (1 mm by 1 mm) coverage of the flowfield. (2) A method of projecting a 1 mm thick highpower Nd/YAG laser light sheet within the turbinestator cascade. This has enabled a completeinstantaneous intra-blade velocity mapping of the flowfield to be visualized. (3) Finally, software has beendeveloped to automatically analyze the data.!15
