A bottleneck in modern physics teaching for engineering students

In the teaching of University Physics, "Intensifying Modern Physics" is the common wish of the teachers and teaching administrators. It is not only because modern physics has a century-long history and teaching contents should keep step with times, but also because modern physics is considered to be "the footstone of the progress of many technologies" and it plays more and more important role in the engineering science. There are many problems in university physics teaching, such as limited content, small information quantity and the lack of attraction, which result from the scant content of modern physics teaching. In order to intensify modern physics, many efforts have been made. For example, subjects in modern physics have been added in many text books and the content involves relativity, quantum mechanics, atom and molecule, laser, semiconductor, nucleus and elementary particles, metagalaxy and so on. Meanwhile many modern applied technologies in physics have been introduced, such as rockets, low temperature technique, piezoelectricity, magnetic liquid, magnetic record, liquid crystal, infrared ray, optical fiber and nuclear magnetic resonance. All these efforts have undoubtedly contribution a lot to modernization of university physics.
