Fish escapees from aquaculture facilities can have ecological or evolutionary effects on wild populations. Understanding the extent of these impacts first requires the correct identification and traceability of specific individuals or groups of fish.This is currently difficult to achieve due to the lack of a cost effective technique that can accurately mark and trace escaped fish back to their point of origin. A successful marking technique for farmed fish would help regulatory bodies determine thesources of escapees and the number of escape events.
