Left heart failure is common in dogs with advanced myxomatous mitral valve degeneration (MMVD) and is frequently fatal when refractory to medical management or side effects of therapy are manifest. Left atrial decompression (LAD) involves creating aniatrogenic atrial septal defect (iASD) via percutaneous jugular catheterization, which rapidly reduces left atrial hypertension.
