Algae Systems operates a pilot facility in Daphne, AL to treat wastewater and produce biofuel. Up to 40,000 gallons of municipal wastewater is subjected to solids removal and disinfection. The resulting effluent is deployed to photobioreactors floating on Mobile Bay. In the photobioreactor, a naturally evolved community of microalgae treats the wastewater. Use of floating photobioreactors eliminates competition for arable land and allows collocation with existing wastewater sources. Mixing is provided by wave energy, further reducing energy demands. The microalgae remove >95% of the nitrogen and phosphorus, >85 % of the biological oxygen demand, and 100% of the fecal coliform, making the Algae Systems process competitive with traditional secondary and tertiary treatment alternatives.
