3-month aerobic training attenuates exercise-induced oxidative stress in overweight adolescent girls

In a previous study, we demonstrated that the lipid excess in obesity increased exercise-induced oxidative stress (OS) in adolescent girls [1]. It is known that aerobic training decreases exercise-induced OS in non-obese people; therefore, we hypothesized that it would have the same effect in overweight and obese adolescent girls. For this purpose, 35 adolescent girls (14 non-obese [NOB] and 21 overweight or obese [OV]) participated to the study. Among them 6 NOB and 13 OV participated to 3-month aerobic training. Anthropometric parameters, aerobic fitness, pre and post-exercise plasma OS markers (isoprostanes [isoP] and lipid hydroperoxides [ROOH]) were measured at baseline and after 3 months. Our results show that aerobic training attenuates the baseline post-exercise increase of isoP and ROOH in OV subjects. In conclusion, 3-month aerobic training improves the tolerance to exercise-induced OS in OV adolescent girls.
