The use of carbons in sample preparation devices for analytical chemistry applications has been advancing for several decades. Recent advancements in process purification and sample preparation techniques have led to the use of carbons in sample concentrating techniques such as solid phase extraction (SPE), solid phase microextraction (SPME), air sampling tubes and porous layer open tubular (PLOT) columns for gas chromatographic separation of light gases. The level of analyses continue to decrease, therefore the reversible adsorption/desorption process continues to be challenged for porous and non-porous solids used for the sample concentrating steps. Improvements in carbon purities, particle size distribution, pore structure and surface chemistries have led to the ability to analyze (i.e., adsorption and desorption are mass balanced) trace-levels of the respective analytes [1].
