Lower Devonian stromatoporoids of the Sierra Morena (Southern Spain) and their palaeogeographic affinities

For the first time the stromatoporoid fauna from two locations in the Peri& Cortado Limestone (Upper Emsian) from the Sierra Moreno (Southern Spain) has been examined in detail. The fauna contains 8 stromatoporoid species. One of them, a new species, is described as Pseudotrupetostroma anacontentoae n. sp. The absence of stromatoporoids with branched coenostea and the scarcity of stromatoporoids with thin-layered encrusting growth form probably served as an obstacle to reef construction. The fauna of the Sierra Morena is unrelated to that of the Eastern Americas Realm. However, it is closely related to Emsian faunas of Australia and Canada. There is no evidence to suggest that Southern Spain was a refuge for Eastern Americas stromatoporoids.
