AQUASAFE PROJECT: HEALTH AND SAFETY IN AQUACULTURE. WORK RISK ASSESSMENT AND WORK HAZARD PREVENTION FOR TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT OF AQUACULTURE PRODUCTION

Occupational Health and Safety (H&S) legislation has been evolved and applied to a variety of occupations and workplaces. Strangely enough, no applicable H&S guidelines have been given to aquaculture, even though this industrial sector has been extremely active over the past 25 years in Greece and European countries in general. AquaSafe, a joint research project (PASTI, FGM, KEK DIASTASI), funded by EU (EAHW-OSHA, SME/2002/4300/GR), with participation of the social partners (employers-FGM and managers-employees-PASTI) of Greek mariculture, ejects the common distress for the improvement of level of occupational H&S. At the same time, the need for application of a Total Quality Management (TQM) system in aquaculture demands for full control and best management of all production parameters of the corporation, including occupational H&S. The proposed plan aims were set at minimising work related hazards through the development of H&S 'directives' ready for incorporating to a TQM system, referred to thedifferent tasks within production line, covering all aspects of work, and development of training methods, addressed mainly to TQM & H&S executives and to the employees.
