Many State agencies are now including condensible particulate matter (CPM) limits in their permits for new power plants. There is a growing need for utilities to understand the extent of CPM emissions and the potential control methods available. The fraction of CPM emissions in the total PM emissions appears to be a function of the type of coal being fired as well as the type of emissions control system employed. New power plants with CPM emission limits in their permit may have a difficult time obtaining vendor performance guarantees. Sargent & Lundy has reviewed emissions data from several coal-fired plants. Test reports were analyzed to determine the fraction of CPM among the total PM and the testing methodology employed at each facility. This paper will summarize available information on PM emissions from coal-fired power plants and review control techniques to minimize CPM emissions.
