STEAM INITIATIVES AT THE CARLOS MUSEUM: BRINGING SCIENCE INTO THE GALLERIES AND CULTURAL HERITAGE INTO THE CLASSROOM

Emory University's Carlos Museum integrates cultural heritage preservation into science education initiatives through online resources, courses, workshops, and tours. Museum conservators worked with Emory's Center for Science Education and area science teachers to develop a website with lab activities based on art conservation practices and paired with Georgia Performance Standards for chemistry, biology, and earth sciences (http://carlos.emory.edu/science-art-conservation). An online series of student-produced podcasts explores how ancient materials or manufacturing methods and modern conservation procedures illustrate General Chemistry concepts (http://carlos.emory.edu/scienceofart). Interdisciplinary undergraduate courses use object-based inquiry to demonstrate analytical methods and teach about instrumental techniques. The docent-led STEAM tour features examples of preventive care, conservation treatment, and cultural heritage research tied directly to exhibited objects. Educator programs enable teachers to experience these resources through hands-on opportunities. These varied and complementary resources reveal how cultural heritage can be a vibrant context through which to achieve goals for science education at multiple levels.
