Phosphate rock (PR) deposits are found throughout the world. Approximately 30 countries are currently producing PR for use in domestic markets and/or for international trade. Approximately 90% of the world production of PR is consumed by the fertilizer industry with the remaining 10% used for the manufacture of animal feeds, detergents, and chemicals. This paper attempts to (1) give an overview of past and current world PR production, (2) provide a general assessment of world PR reserves and resources, and (3) identify conditions likely to affect further exploitation of PR deposits on a worldwide basis.
