In this work, the effect of the molecular weight of poly(maleic anhydride amide-co-alpha-octadecene)s (MAC) a on the efficiency to improve the flow ability of oil was investigated. Using the orthogonal experiment design, the impacts of four synthesis conditions: the dose of initiator, ratio of maleic anhydride to a-octadecene, solvent volume and the polymerization time on the molecular weight of MAC precursor poly(maleic anhydride-co-a-octadecene) were discussed in systematically. The solvent volume and the ratio of maleic anhydride to a-octadecene were the most important factors on MAC molecular weight. The best result to reduce the yield stress of model oil appeared for MAC from the precursor with a molecular weight of 5525 g/mol.
