A commonly-used glucose-yeast extract medium was used as control medium to evaluate kinetic parameters of fungus Pythium irrelaree, which is considered a potential EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) source. Pirt Model and Monod Model were applied. The biomsss formation model was set and the values of biomass yield, decay constant, half-saturation constant and maximum specific growth rate were obtained. Based on the analysis of substrate utilization in the medium, the C/N ratio of the commonly-used medium was considered inadequate. Media optimization was conducted. A more reasonable medium was obtained.
