A Further Analysis of Integrity Methods for Tightly Coupled GPS/IRS Systems

Use of an integrated GPS/inertial system can be effective in mitigating the effects of GPS signal interference such as intentional jamming. Our earlier paper investigated two integrity methods for tightly coupled GPS/inertial systems: Extrapolation Method and Solution Separation Method. In that paper, both methods are shown to have an advantage and a disadvantage. This paper extends our previous analysis and addresses two important issues. First, it re-examines the Horizontal Protection Level (HPL) formulas of the two methods in more detail to determine how they can be compared on an equal basis. Second, it develops a covariance simulation approach that can dramatically reduce the amount of simulation runs that would be required for a brute-force Monte-Carlo simulation approach.
