A novel technique for the adaptive refinement of shells in explicit-dynamics calculations is presented. This h-type technique is applied to quadrilateral meshes which were generated by splitting triangular grids. The underlying triangular structure is used to provide higher order accuracy in the refinement of curved surfaces and to act as a framework for further splitting the regions needing refinement. The refinement process does not require any rezoning of transition zones or generation of hanging nodes that have to be kinematically tied to master nodes. This method has been successfully applied to problems involving the local and global buckling of shell structures.
