The history of the extension service in Nigeria parallels the history of agriculture and its development in the nation. Agriculture as a formal institutional function started in Nigeria in 1893 with the establishment of a Department of Botanical Research at Olokemeji in Western Nigeria. This department eventually failed and was abandoned. In 1905 the British Cotton Growing Association acquired about four square miles of land at Moor Plantation, Ibadan, for the purpose of growing cotton for the British textile industry. This scheme also failed. Moor Plantation then became the headquarters of the Department of Agriculture for Southern Nigeria. Northern Nigeria, under Lord Lugard, was administered as a separate unit and the development of its agriculture followed the same general pattern as in the south.
