The treatment of radioactive materials results in products that have to be suitable for a period of interim storage as well as for disposal in a repository. Considering available options for treatment of radioactive waste, future disposal also has to be taken into account. Up to now, only cementation and encapsulation in geopolymer (only to limited extent) are relevant treatment methods for the solidification of German waste for disposal in the repository Grube Konrad. However, a synopsis of other solidification technologies is considered to be helpful in order to be prepared for future developments in the fields of radioactive waste treatment. Treatment methods addressed in this paper are: · Cementation · Encapsulation into geopolymer matrix · Vitrification · SYNROC · Geomelting The criteria for evaluation of the treatment methods are as follows: · Requirements concerning waste properties · Safety of treatment facilities · Fulfillment of waste acceptance criteria for repository Grube Konrad · Fulfillment of requirements for near surface disposal · Suitability for long-term interim storage.
