Strategic Assessment on Emerging Innovative Transportation Technologies for Future Transportation in Texas

This paper provides details of the major tasks completed by the Texas Technology Task Force from February-December 2013, and the main focus lies on the technical assessment frameworks the Task Force developed to evaluate and assess four groups of emerging technologies. Each evaluation considered the following four groups of emerging transportation technologies: (1) connected vehicles, (2) autonomous vehicles, (3) electric systems, and (4) cloud computing/ crowdsourcing technologies. Four major areas of evaluation were completed and are detailed in this paper include: 1) determination of development stages of emerging vehicular technologies and associated activities, 2) technology maturity assessment from the public and private perspective, 3) joint technology system synergies assessment, and 4) assessment of transportation technology alignment with goals, and potential issues and concerns. Findings from these assessments are given, and based on them, recommendations are provided.
