In a large number of countries, at the end of the school year, school year repeat can be an option for the students who, despite all the support measures taken during the year, did not manage to record sufficient progress. The study approaches the legislation and practices in force, in certain EU member states, in terms of repeating the school year at the elementary school and middle school, which represents compulsory education in most countries. It is shown that the practices vary a great deal from one country to the other: if a student has to repeat a school year or not depends more on the educational culture in question and on the assessment of the teaching staff, than on his/her performance.
