Fuel derived from MSW has the potential to become a cleaner complement to coal through co-combustion in existing coal power plant, while addressing the environmental issue of solid waste accumulation. This paper describes and studies the novel technology of ReEF? co-firing, a waste derived fuel developed by Accordant Energy?. This novel engineered fuel combines non-recyclable waste and criterial pollutant reduction sorbents to reach even further SO2 emissions reduction than obtained by conventional dry sorbent injection. This work focuses on the description of the potential of this new engineered fuel, and on the study of the emissions from co-feeding coal and ReEF? of different compositions in a reactor reproducing the combustion environment of pulverized coal boiler. Emissions reduction up to 30%, 31% and 48% were obtained with ReEF? composed of waste and CaCO3 at a total stoic of 1, 2 and 2.5 respectively. Those promising results were obtained for a residence time of less than 0.5s in the high temperature boiler, suggesting the potential of even higher reduction at residence time typical of pulverized coal boilers.
