Oil Extraction and Processing The Alberta Oil Sands are the second largest source of oil in the world. Located in the northeastern portion of the Province of Alberta in Canada (see Figure 1 below), the oil sands cover an area greater than 54,000 square miles. The oil produced from the Alberta Oil Sands is considered a major source of the world's oil.
