Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) is a chronic common disease in many men, the disease presents with a progressive course that can result in complications such as acute urinary retention (AUR) and BPH-related surgery. The current standard methods of care for detecting and monitoring the disease is not adequate for screening patients because they are invasive, nonspecific or insensitive. A urine based markers would be noninvasive, inexpensive and high accuracy. Metabolic profiling of urine allows measurement of several metabolites simultaneously, rendering it an attractive tool for the comprehensive assessment of the metabolome associated with the disease. In this study, urine samples obtained from clinically diagnosed patients of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) were analyzed and compared to the patients of Hernia as controls. Twenty eight ions for BPH were found from the S plot. A cholic acid like compound was found to be 6 fold higher in concentration in the BPH urine than in hernia urine. The AUC (S.D.velence0.21) of the cholic acid like compound is 0.960 in the ROC curve. The compound could be served as a potential biomarker for monitoring BPH.
